The Sarah Hughes Archive The
Sarah Hughes Archive is Sarah’s collection of printed newspaper cuttings stored
and preserved by The Sarah Hughes Trust. The archive contains the physical
versions of her articles, features, book reviews, tv guides, news reports and
sports journalism. Covering her hugely popular television and entertainment
writing, it holds her earlier sport journalism on horse racing, football,
boxing and USA College football and basketball, and includes her award winning
human rights reports with the
photojournalist Kate Holt, on human right abuses by UN peacekeepers in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The
Sarah Hughes Archive preserves and disseminates the legacy of Sarah Hughes
(1972 – 2021). Dating from the turn of
the century (1997) to the month of her death in 2021, The Sarah Hughes Archive
captures both Sarah’s eclectic, feminist, interdisciplinary approach to journalism and
acts as an ode to the physical materiality
of newspapers and printed matter.

Including cuttings from the Guardian, the Observer,
the Independent, the Independent on Sunday, the I, New Nation, the Manchester Evening News, Sports First and New York Daily News, the archive also contains Sarah’s ‘under-the-line’ writing as experienced through her Guardian TV blogs and episode recaps, including her engaging Twitter feed (April 2011 - April 2021).

	Sarah Hughes
The following text has been
adapted from Ben Quinn’s piece ‘Brilliant and versatile’
Observer and Guardian journalist Sarah Hughes dies at 48, (The Guardian, 6th
April 2021). Sarah Hughes was a hugely
respected Guardian and Observer journalist who died from breast
cancer on the 5th April 2021 at the age of 48. Sarah’s work ranged
from hard-hitting and acclaimed overseas reportage, to sport journalism
covering horse racing and football, to the television and entertainment writing
that she went on to specialise in. This included her hugely successful Game of Thrones blog for the Guardian,
and also her episode recaps for TV shows Line
of Duty and Peaky Blinders.

Vicky Frost, who was TV and radio editor at
the Guardian when Sarah first
persuaded her to commission increasingly popular episode-by-episode recaps for Game of Thrones and Line of Duty, said she had “a real fan’s eye” for the shows that
people were going to get obsessed with.

“I think what makes her recaps so
great is that she really watched shows as a fan and valued the conversation the
recaps prompted. They really do embody that idea of watching telly with
obsessive friends you’ve never met,” she added.

Sarah also had considerable
experience in lifestyle journalism, writing regularly for the Guardian’s women’s pages and the Observer news desk. As well as the Guardian and Observer she regularly contributed to a variety of publications
including the Independent, the Independent on Sunday, the I, the Telegraph and Metro

Sarah wrote a number of candid
pieces for the Observer about her
illness. In one article in the Observer
magazine, she spoke of coping with
cancer against the backdrop of lockdown, her love for Kris, Ruby and Oisin, and
the advice she would give to any reader.

“Even in these depressing times
try to find some part of the day that is worth relishing, whether it is a
moment of beauty half-glimpsed outside, the joy found in escaping into a
different world on page or screen, or the pleasure of dressing up for yourself
and no one else because it makes you feel fine.” - Sarah Hughes, ‘Find a part of
each day to relish’: coping with cancer and Covid, the Observer, 15th November 2020

A version of this article, along
with some of her most-loved columns appears in her book Holding Tight, Letting Go: My Life, Death And All The Madness In
Between, a collection of essays on living with terminal metastatic cancer, supported
with contributions by friends, and published in 2022 by Blink Publishing.

In 2004 she was shortlisted for
an Amnesty International award for her reports with the photojournalist Kate
Holt on abuses by UN peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“Sarah had a wonderful way of
turning interviews from places like the DRC or Burundi into stories that people
could relate to,” said Holt, who recalled her portrayal of the lives of teenage
girls who were being forced to sleep with UN peacekeepers.

“Sarah carried this ability to
see the world through others’ eyes and write eloquently on deeply emotional and
complex subjects as her career and life developed.”“She was a remarkably talented
and versatile journalist, writing about TV, films, books, sport, and living
life to the full, with insight, elegance and skill.”

- Paul Webster, editor of the Observer

“Sarah was a wonderful writer,
who wrote brilliantly about TV, books and much else for the Observer and the
Guardian. Her episode-by-episode recaps on Line
of Duty, Game of Thrones and
other shows helped redefine arts writing for the digital age, building warm and
loyal communities around each. She also wrote powerfully about her illness.”

Viner, Guardian editor-in-chief

“Her writing stood out as being
inspired by a love of TV, stimulating others to feel the same and adding to her
readers’ enjoyment of their favourite programmes.”

- Jed Mercurio, television
writer, director and producer

“Sarah was such a champion of my
work and a passionate generous advocate of TV. She was endlessly curious,
hilarious and kind, an incisively brilliant and fearless writer. She will be so
very missed.”- Sarah Phelps, screenwriter and
television producer “She was a pleasure to work with, both in the
office and virtually – she had a skill with a recap that is unsurpassed, the
hundreds of adoring commenters were testament to that. She’ll be hugely
missed.”
- Toby Moses, TV editor at the Guardian

	Who We Help
The Sarah Hughes Trust supports the

Guardian Positive Action Scheme.

This is a two-week paid work experience placement for those from under represented groups who are aiming to start a career in journalism. There are schemes for people with disabilities, for people who are Black, Asian or minority ethnic, and for people from working class backgrounds. The schemes give opportunities to work across the Guardian in departments such as News, Sports, Features, Podcasting, Business, and Photography. The aim of these schemes is first to identify journalists who have clear potential, and then give them the opportunity to work closely with experienced writers and editors in the London head office.

Through our
fundraising in Sarah’s name, the Sarah Hughes Trust provides financial
support for participants each year – helping those from across
the country, who don't have connections to London, to
cover the accommodation costs for the duration of their placement.
Joseph Harker, the Guardian Senior Editor (Diversity and
Development), who has run the scheme since its launch, says: "In the past
20 years we've seen many gifted young journalists from non-traditional
backgrounds take a major step in their careers through this programme. Since
the Sarah Hughes Trust began its support we've been able to add regional
diversity too, and to create even more opportunities. Sarah Hughes
has certainly had a major impact on the next generation of
journalists.”Two of the past Sarah Hughes Trust recipients, Sundus Abdi (2022) and Priya Bharadia (2023), have gone on to be awarded the prestigious Scott Trust Bursary. Testimonials of the
impact Sarah Hughes has had on the next generation of journalists

The support from the Sarah Hughes Trust alleviated my worries about
finding and funding accommodation in London, making it possible for me to
complete the Positive Action Scheme placement. Thanks to the Trust, I was able
to take my first steps in journalism and discover that it is the right career
path for me. I'm sincerely grateful for the life and legacy of Sarah Hughes,
whose trust continues to make a difference to early-career journalists. – Sundus Abdi (2022)

Had it not been for the
Sarah Hughes Trust I wouldn’t have been able to take up my offer at the
Guardian…i can tell you wholeheartedly that it means so much to be given the
opportunity and financial possibility of going to London to undertake work
experience…this entire experience has opened my eyes and has helped me
visualise where i want to be in journalism - Flo Cornall (2022)

Taking part in the
Guardian’s Positive Action Scheme last summer allowed me to envision myself as
a working journalist for the first time, unimpeded my financial barriers. - Priya Bharadia (2023)

I was very grateful for the help of the Sarah Hughes Trust as I would
not have been able to complete my incredible two-week placement at The Guardian
without it due to my lack of financial support. I learnt so much and it
gave me the belief I needed to become a success in the journalism industry. – Huzaifah Khan (2024)
The Guardian’s Positive Action Scheme made a real difference as a first hand opportunity to work in a newsroom. Without the logistical assistance and financial support from the Sarah Hughes Trust, at a time when I was busy with my MA dissertation, I would not have been able to enjoy and immerse myself in the experience in the same way. The Trust was so forthcoming in its help and it is a credit to the institution that they really foregrounded the interests and administrative concerns of the interns. - Emmanuel Adeyemi-Abere (2024)
I would like to emphasis how important this support is to me, and I would not be able to take part in the Guardian Positive Action Scheme without it, which is the most exciting achievement of my life. Prior to attending the interview for the internship I’d only ever been to London once, on a school trip, so it was an incredible feeling to be in the heart of the city. Coming from Greater Manchester, London seemed like quite a world away, and being able to stay there for the duration of my internship thanks to the Trust is life changing. So thank you so much to all involved, and this support is something I will never forget. - Antonia Shipley (2025) Guardian Article two; Guardian article three
It can’t be overstated how much the positive action scheme is the best possible way to get your first look into a national news organisation. All those involved were incredible at impressing upon me that it is possible to make it in the journalism industry without being from London. Without the prospect of the Sarah Hughes Trust and its ability to allow me, originally from Leeds, to stay in London for the duration of the placement, I couldn’t have even dreamed of applying for the scheme, nevermind take part. I can’t express my gratitude enough to the organisers of both initiatives.- Connor Myers (2025)I am originally from Blackburn, Lancashire, and growing up, I always felt that exciting opportunities were out of reach. With journalism, this feels even more true. National papers are based in London, but the high costs that come with living in the city mean that a lot of working-class journalists are excluded from these newsrooms, which limits the range of coverage in the mainstream media. This funding will ease any financial stresses that come with being on a placement in the capital. Instead, I’ll be able to concentrate on the stories that I will be producing and be able to make the most of this life-changing opportunity. - Sabah Salam (2025)

Our fundraising provides crucial financial support for the Guardian Positive Action Scheme participants each year - helping those from across the country, who don't have connections to London, to cover the accommodation costs for the duration of their placement. This allows many gifted young journalists from non-traditional backgrounds take a major step in their careers.
